The Architecture of a Smart Garage
A garage is often the most vulnerable entry point of a home, yet it is frequently automated using insecure, cloud-dependent Wi-Fi openers. If the internet goes down, or the company decides to put essential features behind a monthly subscription wall, your smart garage breaks.
By moving to UniFi Protect, you gain local, secure control over your garage access, video storage, and telemetry sensors. To build a highly resilient local network backbone in your garage, we strongly recommend running an uplink Ethernet cable from your main Dream Machine Pro inside the house directly to a local UniFi PoE Switch mounted in the garage. This switch serves as your local distribution hub, providing PoE power and data lines directly to your wired cameras, wireless gateways, and access points.
This decentralized architecture splits responsibilities across specialized, robust hardware:
- Network Backbone: Uplink line from your central Dream Machine Pro to a local UniFi PoE Switch.
- Wi-Fi Infrastructure: A ceiling-mounted UniFi Access Point delivers high-speed local data pipelines to cameras and gateways.
- IoT Telemetry: The UniFi SuperLink Gateway handles long-range Sub-GHz signals, serving as the bridge for low-latency IoT sensors and relays.
- Relay Operation: The Protect Smart Relay (USL-Relay) triggers the door opener's button terminal, acting as a momentary dry-contact switch.
- Physical State Detection: The Protect Sensor (UP-Sense) reports whether the door is open, closed, or tilted using magnetic contact and a built-in accelerometer.
- Video Coverage: A wireless G6 Instant Camera monitors the internal space, while a PoE wired G5 Turret Ultra guards the driveway from outside.
Key Project Goals
- Zero Subscriptions: All footage and sensor logs are recorded locally to your UniFi Console (UDM Pro/SE or NVR).
- Security+ 2.0 Compatibility: Bypass encrypted button console signals to trigger modern LiftMaster openers securely.
- Driveway Auto-Unlock: Utilize wired camera vehicle recognition to build smart local automations.
- Custom Spliced Power: Cleanly power the Smart Relay with a dedicated 5V/2A power block directly into its terminal screws.

Wiring to the LiftMaster Opener
Connecting the UniFi Protect Smart Relay (USL-Relay) to your LiftMaster opener requires wiring the relay's **COM (Common)** and **O1 (Output 1)** outputs to the physical input terminals on the opener motor. However, the exact configuration depends on whether your LiftMaster uses the proprietary **Security+ 2.0** digital protocol.
Splicing the 5V/2A Power Supply
Crucial Relay Power Note
The UniFi Protect Smart Relay is not PoE powered. It requires an external power supply connected directly into its terminal screws. While it can run on 12-24V AC/DC, it is optimized to run on standard **5V DC (minimum 2.0 Amps)**. Since standard off-the-shelf wall adapters terminate in USB or barrel connectors, you must **splice** the power cord to wire it to the relay.
Order & Prep the Adapter
Purchase a reliable, high-density **5V/2A power supply** (like this Amazon block). Make sure the power plug is unplugged from the wall outlet. Using wire cutters, snip the barrel connector or USB end off the wire.
Expose Positive & Ground
Carefully slice and remove 1 inch of the outer protective jacket to expose the two inner conductors. You will find a **Red wire (Positive, +5V)** and a **Black wire (Negative/GND)**. Strip 1/4 inch of insulation off the ends of these inner wires to expose raw copper, then twist the copper strands tightly.
Wire into the Terminal
Locate the **Power In** terminal blocks on the Smart Relay. Insert the **Red wire into the V+ terminal** and the **Black wire into the GND terminal**. Tighten the terminal screws firmly. Wrap the exposed spliced joint in electrical tape or heat-shrink tubing for physical protection.
Software Setup & Smart Automations
Configure UniFi Protect Console
- Adopt the SuperLink Gateway in the UniFi Protect app.
- Put the Smart Relay (USL-Relay) into pairing mode (press & hold power button). Protect will adopt it via the SuperLink protocol.
- Go to USL-Relay device settings. Set the switch action mode to **Momentary Pulse** and set the duration to **1.0 second**. (Continuous toggle will block the LiftMaster logic board).
- Adopt and mount the Protect Sensor (UP-Sense) to the upper panel of your garage door. In its settings, select "Garage Door" mode to enable accelerometer tilt and open/close detection.
Automation Rules (Protect Rules Engine)
Rule 1: Driveway Safe Lighting
Trigger: Driveway camera (G5 Turret Ultra) detects vehicle motion at night.
Action: Trigger floodlight or switch on smart driveway landscape lights for 10 minutes.
Rule 2: Auto-Close Lockout
Trigger: UP-Sense reports the garage door is open for > 15 mins after 10:00 PM.
Action: Send high-priority push notification to admin device, and auto-pulse USL-Relay to close the door.

Q: Why did my LiftMaster console freeze or lock out when I directly wired the Smart Relay to it?
LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers manufactured after 2011 use the **Security+ 2.0** digital data protocol. Unlike legacy openers that respond to a simple momentary electrical short, modern openers send data commands over the two button console wires. Direct short-circuiting triggers a warning state inside the motherboard and will disable the opener console. You must use a digital dry-contact adapter block or solder wires directly across the internal switch of a spare wall remote/button console (like the 883LM) to trigger it safely.
Q: Do I need a UniFi Access Hub to run the Smart Relay?
No. The Protect Smart Relay (USL-Relay) uses the **SuperLink** wireless IoT protocol managed by the UniFi SuperLink Gateway (USL-Gateway), which reports directly to the **UniFi Protect** application. You do not need to install or run the UniFi Access console, making it a clean setup inside the Protect security system.
Q: Why is a SuperLink Gateway required instead of standard Wi-Fi?
The USL-Relay and UP-Sense communicate using Sub-GHz radio frequencies (similar to Z-Wave or LoRa). This provides two massive benefits: extreme range (up to 2 km line-of-sight) to penetrate through concrete and garage firewalls, and ultra-low battery drain for the UP-Sense sensor. The SuperLink Gateway bridges these long-range Sub-GHz signals back into your standard IP network.
Q: What happens if the garage power cuts out? Can I still operate the door?
If the power cuts out, the Smart Relay and LiftMaster opener will shut down unless powered by a battery backup or a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply). However, the manual emergency pull cord on the LiftMaster opener is unaffected, allowing you to physically open and close the garage door from inside.
